Debut Memoir

"With each great story comes the weight
of how to describe it."

That Can’t Be True is a literary memoir about what happens when the story you told yourself to survive begins to unravel. After discovering her late mother’s journals, Nicole is confronted with a version of her childhood that challenges long-held beliefs about her memories, her family, and herself.

Told through dual timelines, from a rural Canadian farm to an outwardly polished life in Chicago, the book follows Nicole’s search for truth as she revisits fragmented memories, inherited family trauma, and the narratives that once kept her safe. Ultimately, That Can’t Be True is a story about memory, identity, and the cost and freedom of letting go of the story that helped you survive.
